Is a centipede an insect?

A centipede is classified as a myriapod, which is distinct from insects. While both centipedes and insects belong to the larger group called arthropods, they fall into different subphyla. Centipedes are part of the class Chilopoda, whereas insects belong to the class Insecta. This classification is based on physical characteristics, body structure, and developmental pathways that differentiate the two groups.

Centipedes have elongated bodies with many segments, each typically possessing one pair of legs, and they also have a unique respiratory system compared to insects. Insects, on the other hand, usually have three main body sections (head, thorax, abdomen), possess compound eyes, and have two pairs of wings in many cases.
